Scientists in Amsterdam have discovered a possible solution to cure breast cancer without chemotherapy.
The team of researchers led by Nigel Bundred revealed at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Amsterdam that the mixture of Herceptin (also known as trastuzumab) and Lapatinib, both commonly used in breast cancer treatment, could be used to eliminate some types of breast cancer in just eleven days.
Funded by the Cancer Research UK, the study had 257 women with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) to be selected for the study. One hundred thirty of them were first assigned in one of the three groups: the group that will receive Herceptin, the group that will receive lapatinib, and the group that will not receive any drugs before surgery.
Scientists found out those on the combination of Herceptin and lapatinib experienced dramatically shrunken tumors, while 7 of the 66 women had no cancer cells remaining within two weeks.
This could mean that women who have breast cancer could just receive these drugs without undergoing painful chemotherapy.
The problem, however, is that Herceptin’s licensing makes it only available for use alongside chemotherapy.
Scientists behind this brilliant discovery said the results of this study may help to change the direction of treating cancer. They also hope that this could be a major breakthrough in the scientific community.
