Diabetes is a growing health problem worldwide, according to the International Diabetes Federation.
The Philippines is one of the countries with the most number of recorded diabetes cases, with 3.5 million Filipino patients as of 2015.
In fact, diabetes mellitus is on the 4th spot of the top ten causes of death in the Philippines according to the Department of Health. Statistics also say that one person dies from diabetes every 10 seconds.
Experts believe that the eating patterns of the most Filipinos are to be blame for the rise in number of diabetic patients.
Diabetes affects the body’s ability to produce blood sugar.
It comes in 2 distinct forms:
In the case of type 1 diabetes, the body is unable to make its own insulin. Type 1 diabetes is congenital and usually occurs at a young age.
With type 2 diabetes, the body does not use its insulin very well. It is typically caused by obesity and makes up about 90 % of diabetic cases.
Insulin is a hormone that allows your body to process sugar or glucose. Insulin regulates our blood sugar levels, keeping them from getting too high or too low. Without enough insulin, the body’s cells will absorb too much sugar, causing the blood sugar level to increase higher than normal. This could damage the eyes, kidneys and nerves. Diabetes also leads to heart disease, stroke, amputation, even death.
For many patients, medication for this disease is very expensive. However, there are available home remedies that can be used as alternatives for treating this potentially deadly disease.
One of them is the consumption of eggs.
Although high in cholesterol, different studies show that eggs are effective in controlling the blood sugar levels of diabetic patients.
